Supplements for Homemade Dog Food

Supplements can help fill nutritional gaps, support specific health concerns, and make homemade dog food more balanced over time.

For Layla, we use a combination of supplements, healthy fats, calcium sources, and organ meats to help support her overall diet.

Why Supplements Matter in Homemade Dog Food

Homemade dog food is not just about meat and vegetables.

Even with a balanced recipe, supplements can still play an important role.

Some supplements are used every day.

Others may only be used occasionally depending on what is already in the meal.

How We Decide Which Supplements to Use

We try to keep Layla’s supplements simple.

Instead of using dozens of different products, we focus on the areas that matter most for her.

We also think about what is already in the batch.

For example, if Layla is getting organ meats regularly, we may skip a multivitamin because organ meats already provide many important nutrients.

Supplements we commonly use:

  • Calcium
  • Healthy fats
  • Probiotics
  • Heart support
  • Dental support
  • Organ meats
  • Multivitamins when needed

The Supplements We Use for Layla

Calcium

Helps balance homemade meals that do not include bones

Usually added through Sea-Cal or eggshell powder

Mixed directly into every batch we make

Probiotics

Helps support digestion and gut health

Usually added directly into Layla’s meals

Most helpful during food changes or upset stomachs

Heart Support

Used because Layla is a heartworm survivor

We use a heart supplement from Fera Pets

Given separately from her meals

Dental Support

Helps support teeth and overall oral health

We use a dental supplement from Animal Essentials

Usually mixed directly into the batch

Multivitamins

Used when Layla is not getting organ meats

We use a multivitamin powder from Fera Pets

Added only when we want extra nutritional support

As-Needed

Urinary, liver, or immune support.

Mushroom blends for immune support and overall wellness

We add these types of supplements as needed

How Our Supplements Changed Over Time

When we first started feeding homemade food, we felt like we needed to do everything perfectly.

Over time, we realized it is better to keep things simple.

We started with calcium and a few basics, then slowly added more as we learned what worked best for Layla.

Now, instead of trying to use every supplement possible, we focus on the ones that fit her needs.

That includes digestion, heart support, healthy fats, and making sure her meals stay balanced over time.

Common Supplement Mistakes

Supplements can be helpful, but it is easy to overdo them.

These are some of the biggest supplement mistakes people make when feeding homemade dog food.

Some of the biggest supplement mistakes people make include:

  • Adding too many supplements at once
  • Forgetting calcium
  • Using a multivitamin and organ meats together without paying attention to overlap
  • Assuming every dog needs the same supplements
  • Not adjusting supplements based on a dog’s health needs

We have found it better to start simple and add things slowly.

Why More Supplements Is Not Always Better

One of the biggest risks with supplements is accidentally giving too much of the same vitamin or nutrient.

But more is not always better.

Some nutrients overlap. For example, a heart supplement may already contain vitamin D or other added nutrients. A multivitamin may contain those same ingredients as well.

That means using too many supplements together can sometimes create too much of certain vitamins. Certain vitamins can be overdosed and cause major health issues.

Therefore, we try to focus on balance instead of simply adding everything possible.

Watch for Overlapping Ingredients

  • Read labels to see which vitamins and minerals are already included
  • Remember that multivitamins and specialty supplements may overlap
  • Organ meats can also add large amounts of certain vitamins
  • Vitamins A, D, E, and K can be overdosed
  • Keep supplements simple instead of stacking too many together

Frequently Asked Questions

These are some of the most common questions people have about supplements for homemade dog food.

  • Does homemade dog food always need supplements?

Most homemade diets need at least some form of calcium. Beyond that, the supplements you use will depend on your dog and what is already in the meal.

  • Does Layla take supplements every day?

Some she gets daily, like calcium. Others rotate depending on what is already in her meals.

  • Can dogs get too many vitamins?

Yes. That is one reason we try not to stack too many supplements on top of each other.

  • Should I use a multivitamin if I already feed organ meats?

Sometimes you may not need both. However, keep in mind that organ meats already provide many important nutrients.
